It’s a family-owned and operated spot with the owner being the pitmaster and his wife overseeing the guest experience. Chico Malo: “Located in downtown Phoenix, this elevated Mexican cuisine & cocktail bar is inspired by the rich heritage of celebratory dining throughout the different regions of Mexico, showcasing unique cooking techniques and local ingredients in a lively, upscale environment. ZuZu Restaurant: “One recommendation I would make for someone that wants a delicious meal with a great ‘60s vibe, is ZuZu Restaurant inside of the Hotel Valley Ho. Giuseppe’s on 28th: “If you are looking for classic Italian cuisine, Giuseppe’s is the perfect place. One of the must-try dishes is the Suppli di Riso (also known as arancini). These are delicious risotto rice balls that you are sure to talk about afterwards. The Kettle Black:“Look for the restaurant with the big red door! It’s like being in an English pub. If you like bourbon and whiskey they have plenty of choices. Looking for something delicious? Try the Philly cheesesteak fries. The fries are covered in shaved ribeye steak, sauteed peppers and onions, and a creamy cheese sauce. Ajo Al’s Mexican Cafe: “If you are in the mood for Mexican food, a classic restaurant is Ajo Al’s Mexican Café. In the valley since 1986, Ajo Al’s can handle large parties and can provide family-style dishes on request for large celebrations, or if you just like to eat a lot of good Mexican food. Don’t want to leave the house for your birthday? They can also provide catering services directly to your door.” – Andrew Brigida of Digital Perception Photography.

Phoenix is also home to several eclectic coffee shops featuring innovative decorations and displays. Kaylie of the travel blog Run Away With Kay is the perfect person to scour the city for the best coffee shops and come back with her recommendations. Here are three of her favorites:
Sip Coffee: “Located in the Arcadia neighborhood, Sip Coffee & Beer Garage is the perfect spot to spend a summer day. The baristas know their stuff, and the vibe is super calm and chill. I highly recommend ordering their cold brew on tap with a splash of almond milk (it’s addicting!). I’ve spent an entire day sitting quietly working on my laptop, as it is a great place for creatives to connect and get work done. But beware, when the clock strikes 4 p.m., this coffee shop can get a bit rowdy as their downstairs turns into a tiki-style cocktail bar. A coffee shop that serves coffee and alcohol – I know, sounds too good to be true! Whether you are looking to order a basic latte, craft beer, or liquor-infused espresso martini, Sip will have the drink for you.”
Luci’s At the Orchard: “If you are looking for a unique coffee experience, look no further than Luci’s At the Orchard. This place could not be any cuter! From the moment you walk on their grounds, you’ll be surrounded by outdoor seating, a splash pad, and an ice cream parlor. Inside, there are so many fun trinkets, games, and random Arizona-based gifts you can purchase. Not only do they have great tasting coffee options, but they also serve smoothies, brunch food, and bloody Marys that will keep you coming back time and time again.”
The Henry: “As if I don’t talk about The Henry enough, it has to make my top list for coffee. Many locals know The Henry for their delicious food but inside is their own coffee bar that will satisfy any caffeine craving you may have. This is one of my favorite places to “work from home” as it keeps me fueled all day long. Their menu is extensive, offering espresso, smoothies, and chai. Everyone seems to be addicted to the Wildflower, but I have yet to try it. I truly think you can’t go wrong with any of their options. Be sure to order the Caramel Apple French Toast if you start to get hungry!”

Papago Park: “This is an excellent spot for many things. It is a photographer’s dream with the beautiful sunrises or sunsets depending on when you are going. There are also picnic tables if you want to have a small gathering with family and friends. Phoenix Zoo: “Located in Phoenix just East of the Sky Harbor Airport, this non-profit zoo cares for over 3,000 animals with nearly 400 species represented, including many endangered species. The zoo offers daily activities and private events. They offer zoo tours such as the ‘Backstage Adventure’ where you can get a glimpse of the animal habitats, the ‘Tropics Trail’ a lush rainforest landscape with animals or the ‘Native Plants and Animal’ tour, to name a few. Tonto National Forest: “So many options to stay busy in the Tonto National Forest! Great Escapes
Many people do not realize that Scottsdale was the location of a camp built to house prisoners of war during World War II. Located in Camp Papago Park, 625 N Galvin Parkway, on a chilly December night in 1943, 25 German soldiers tunneled their way out of the camp, hoping to make it to the Mexican border and freedom. They did escape and spent up to a few weeks wandering the desert, only to be recaptured with no loss of life. Today, the spot where they came up is marked with a marker in the ground, and although we think this is a pretty cool story, very few people who use the path where it is located for jogging and biking seem to notice.
A Taste of the Area
The epicurean landscape of Scottsdale is an international one, featuring foods of many nationalities, but perhaps the one that best represents the history and the people is a lowkey open air spot called the Stand. Located at 4020 N Alma School Road, the restaurant is definitely nothing to look at, built of arrow root and cactus ribs and often featuring a bright blue plastic tarp as a roof, it is the food that draws us in and has refused to release its hold on us since opening day about 7 or 8 years ago. Frybread is the centerpiece of its menu, a meal that has complicated beginnings, said to have been created from necessity during the Long Walk in 1864 when the US Government forced the Navajo out of the state into New Mexico. Made from a simple dough, it is the toppings that make this dish shine, and can include sweet toppings such as sugar or honey and savory ones with red or green chili. Closed Sundays, its hours are from noon until 6PM; don’t forget to make a stop at the ATM because they only accept cash at this divine roadside stand.
A Little Green in the Desert
What you might not expect from a desert vacation is an oasis of green at its center. The Scottsdale Indian Bend Wash Greenbelt is our town’s version of Central Park, offering 11 miles of bicycle paths, grassy meadows, pools, parks, and golf courses, encouraging visitors and residents to get outside and play. Its borders begin in the center of Scottsdale, ending at Tempe Town Lake, and although Valley dwellers love and adore this splash of green, it is a secret not often shared with travelers, but that’s ok; we consider you friends worthy of sharing the secret with! The biggest secret of the greenbelt is that it is actually a flood prevention tool that took 20 years to plan and complete, but when you are biking, hiking, swimming, or playing a game of golf, we don’t think you will be thinking about the rains and floods, just about all the fun you are having. Pro-tip: If you want to explore all 11 miles of the park but don’t feel like using up all your energy, rent an electric bike from E-bike Tours & Rentals and let the bike do all the work!
Adobe Mountain Train Museum
Americans have always enjoyed a romance with the rails, even as railroad travel is slowly disappearing from the horizon, and Adobe Mountain Desert Railroad Park captures the magic of the train, providing a pleasurable experience for all who visit, even as it is located in one of our neighboring communities. Encompassing everything train over 150 acres, the park offers a train museum filled with artifacts and exhibits, model railroad displays that never fail to stun, and a miniature train ride that will thrill the miniature train enthusiasts in your family. The museum is only open on Sundays from 11-3, the model trains are open on Saturdays from 8-1, and the Live Steamers (the train ride around the park) is also open only on Sundays from 11-3.
Feeling Batty
Although the desert is more likely known for its snakes, spiders, and Gila monsters, it is also the summer home to thousands of Mexican free-tailed bats making a pit stop during their migration to Mexico, and the Phoenix Bat Cave, although not in Scottsdale, is where they like to roost. The “cave” is actually a flood control tunnel that runs through the Phoenix area, and it can be a bit difficult to find, but if you can follow these easy directions, be sure to arrive at sunset so as to enjoy the sight of the thousands of bats fly off into the horizon. Best viewed between May through October, to get to the tunnel you need to walk north west from 40th Street and Camelback on the northernmost end of the Arizona Canal Trail. Google maps may even mark the area with a notation that reads “Bat Cave Parking.”

Majerle’s is a local sports bar owned by one of our hometown heroes, former Phoenix Suns player Dan Majerle, and the televisions inside are wonderful, the food is fantastic, but it is the colorful mural painted on the side of the restaurant that will grab your attention. The Orpheum Theater, 203 W Adams Street
History and talent collide at the Orpheum Theater. Beginning its life as a Vaudeville theater in 1929, it went through many incarnations over the nearly 100 years it has been in business, including a movie theater, a Broadway theater, even a Hispanic cultural centerpiece. Falling into disrepair, it was bought by the city in 1984 and would spend its next 12 years being brought back to life and is today a thriving entertainment venue showing the best plays, comedy, and musical acts.
Celebrity Theater, 440 N 32nd Street
The music is always playing at the Celebrity Theater, offering a revolving stage where some of the world’s top performers have sung for their supper for over 60 years. Bruce Springsteen, BB King, the Grateful Dead—all have graced this unique stage that is the focal point of an intimately sized theater in which there are no bad seats, at least not for long. The stage slowly rotates throughout whatever performance you are watching, and while there may be a portion of the show where you are facing the backside of the performers, the parts where you are close to the front row will bring you joy.
The Phoenix Theater Company, 1825 N Central Avenue
The Phoenix Theater Company is a local theater company that got its start in the 1920s and is one of the oldest continually operating theaters in the West. Our local talent is stunningly good and when you are sitting in the seats of this theater, losing yourself in the magic on the stage, your arts and culture visit to Phoenix will make you feel as if you have stepped into the theater on Broadway.

There are over 20,000 pieces of art encompassing nine permanent collections in the Phoenix Art Museum, and although you would have to move into the museum and live there for at least a dozen years, you can get a comprehensive peek at the exhibits and collections in just one visit. Closed on Mondays and Tuesdays and open at 10 every other day, Ticket costs range from free (museum members and kids 5 and under) to $28 for adults.
Rosson House Museum, 113 N 6th Street
The history of Phoenix is a long and colorful one. The Rosson House Museum provides a fascinating glimpse into the Victorian portion of that history, with the home having been built in 1895. Located in Heritage Square, a segment of land that wasn’t just the original townsite of Phoenix but was the territories of the O’Odham and Piipaash peoples. Today, this brick Victorian with painted gables is closed on Wednesdays, offering tours at various times throughout the day with admission costs ranging from free to $15.
Musical Instrument Museum, 4725 E Mayo Boulevard
This unique museum is much loved by musicians, offering a collection of over 15,000 musical instruments from all over the world. Offering concerts, educational opportunities, and an interactive Experience Gallery that your littles will be thrilled to play in, this museum is a wonderful option for travelers with young children. Open every day from 9AM until 5PM, tickets range from free to $20 and special exhibits or concerts will cost extra.
Funky and Wild
The Roosevelt Row Arts District is perhaps one of our favorite parts of living in this desert town. Offering a row of shops, restaurants, and art galleries, it is epicenter of our cultural activities, offering fun events such as First Fridays, street shows, and every February since 2004, the Erotic Poetry & Music Festivus that is hosted by one of the first galleries we will be discussing below. First, though, if you want to learn a little more about this fantastic artistic center, a visit to the Roosevelt Row Welcome Center, located at 918 N 2nd Street, will tell you everything you need to know.
Alwun House Foundation, 1204 E Roosevelt Street
The centerpiece of the Roosevelt Row Arts District is not a shy and retiring space; rather, it is a vibrant bungalow, painted in bold colors that ensure you won’t accidentally drive by without seeing it. Built in 1912, the Alwun House Foundation bungalow is always on the hunt for new artists, offering two stories of paintings, sculptures, and a variety of artistic genres guaranteed to catch your eye. The garden of Alwun House often features special events including live musical performances and poetry readings, and if your Phoenix visit is for a destination wedding, you may be interested in learning that they rent out the gardens for private events, including weddings. Open Tuesday through Friday, noon until 6PM, admission is generally free but special events will often cost something to see.
Onyx Art Gallery, 1346 W Roosevelt Street Suite A
Offering a sophisticated vibe, Onyx Art Gallery is a relatively new addition to the Arts District, opening its doors back in 2016 when its owner moved from the windy city to the Valley of the Sun. Specializing in live music and visual arts, they also feature a book club, Haus of Soul X Onyx Art Book Club, that celebrates authors from all genres and meets on a regular basis. Open 2-6 Wednesday through Friday, admittance is free, but like the Alwun house, special events may require entrance fees.
Modified Arts, 407 E Roosevelt Street
Featuring contemporary photography, sculptures, paintings, and multimedia exhibits, one of their previous exhibits, Everyday MEMEing, offered a perfect example of their funky and exciting shows. Release the Fear Sculpture by Artist Robert John Miley, 116 W Roosevelt Street
This first sculpture is of a figure that rises out of a melted pile of confiscated weapons. Packing a powerful message, this antigun violence sculpture will certainly give you something to think and talk about.
Dance Sculpture by Artist John Waddell, 222 E Monroe Street
It’s only natural that the Dance sculpture, which is actually three female nudes, dances gracefully in front of the Herberger Center for the Arts. We didn’t mention the Herberger Center earlier, but it is another performing arts venue in which some of the world’s greatest performers have appeared.
Her Secret is Patience by Artist Janet Echelman, 424 N Central Avenue
Located in Civic Space Park, Her Secret is Patience is a 145-foot-tall aerial sculpture made from galvanized steel and cables, giving the appearance of dancing in the sky as it lights up and changes colors—colors that were chosen by the artist to provide a relief of sorts from the desert heat, appearing cooler in the summer months.

Phoenix Festival of the Arts, Hance Park
Featuring the works of over 150 artists and musicians, the Phoenix Festival of the Arts has been held every December for over a decade. Also offering food and beverage trucks, it is a popular winter event for residents and our favorite Paseo Homes guests.
Downtown Glendale Arts & Culture Fest
Although it is not in Phoenix proper, the downtown Glendale Arts & Culture Fest, held at the Civic Center Plaza in Glendale, is a celebration of the works of over 100 artists and musicians while also bringing an interactive arts experience to attendees. This annual event is held in March and will also feature food trucks so that no one has to go hungry while checking out the art and performances that will be the centerpiece of the event.
Tempe Festival of the Arts, 1 W Rio Salado Parkway, December and March
Also located outside Phoenix city limits, the Tempe Festival of the Arts has been a winter and spring tradition for over 50 years and is actually one of the oldest festivals in the Southwest. Artists and musicians from all over the country set up displays, a Kid’s Block allows the younger generation to have a good time, and of course, food and beverage trucks add the perfect finishing touch!

We are going to take photos with the Easter bunny, look at the ducks swimming in the bright blue pond, and eat some of the freshest food in the entire state. Is anybody in the mood for slow-roasted prime rib, striped bass, fresh fruit, salad, or antipasti? We thought so, too.
