Sporting Events
Just when you think the Valley of the Sun couldn’t get any better, you suddenly discover that we are an active sports community, offering not just one or two but multiple professional sports teams across many sports, and a prominent golf tournament as well! When we aren’t rooting for the Phoenix Suns, cheering on the Arizona Cardinals, catching foul balls for the Arizona Diamondbacks, or happily shivering in the icy arena where the Arizona Coyotes play, you may also find us on the sidelines of the Waste Management Open, watching the top golfers play their hearts out as we laugh at the antics taking place on the 16th hole of the TPC Scottsdale course. We at Paseo Homes are big fans of all the Phoenix sporting events that take place in our desert hometown, and the properties we offer are nearly always booked with travelers making their way to Phoenix, eager to cheer on their favorite teams in weather that looks far different than what is taking place in their home state, especially during the winter months. This guide to the sporting events you can explore during your upcoming journey to the Phoenix Metropolitan Area will help you narrow down the timing of your getaway and with some careful planning, you may be able to watch all of our professional teams play during the same vacation!
The Phoenix Suns
The Phoenix Suns are our hometown heroes, having been a part of our sporting community since 1968, and as we have cheered on basketball greats such as Connie Hawkins, Charles Barkley, and today’s favorite, Devin Booker, we have flown close to the stars with three appearances in the NBA finals since 1976. Interestingly, although we have never won a championship, we are considered one of the top teams in the league, placing fifth in all time wins, and as such, we continue to have hope for the future! Today, their home is in the Footprint Center, located in the heart of downtown Phoenix at 201 E Jefferson Street, located close to some of the top bars, nightclubs, and restaurants, making a home game night the perfect opportunity to enjoy a vacation date night. Hoping to catch a glimpse of players after the game? Majerle’s Sports Bar, located at 24 N 2nd Street, is owned by former Phoenix Suns great, Dan Majerle, and has been a long-time hot spot for the players!
The Arizona Cardinals
Although they haven’t been around as long as the Phoenix Suns, the Arizona Cardinals, our professional NFL team, is equally beloved, having taken us to the Super Bowl in 2009! (Coincidentally, Arizona has hosted the Superbowl four times since 1996, with the last one being in 2023.) State Farm Stadium, located at 1 Cardinals Drive, is actually based out of Glendale, but don’t worry about commute time; the stadium is less than 30 miles from your Phoenix or Scottsdale Paseo Homes hideaway. We in the Valley are still getting over the loss of Larry Fitzgerald and Kurt Warner, but we think that the new crop of players are showing great promise, and we look forward to seeing what this team can do in the future.
Arizona Diamondbacks
The boys of summer add a seasonal flair to the valley, playing from Chase Field, also located in the heart of downtown Phoenix and providing a little extra fling to our spring celebration! Phoenix and its surrounding towns are home to the Spring Training Cactus League, making March our favorite month of all. This expansion team came to the valley in 1998 and we are proud to announce they gave us a World Series Championship in 2001, earning our hearts forevermore! Famous Diamondbacks players include Randy Johnson and Luis Gonzales, and although they both have retired, we often think of them fondly!
Arizona Coyotes
It may be strange to think about ice hockey in the desert, but we heat lovers also love the opportunity to shiver, and when the Coyotes play, we shiver and howl quite happily! Currently playing at the Mullett Arena in Tempe while awaiting a new stadium, they were originally the Winnipeg Jets before relocating to the valley in 1996. Although they have never won a Stanley Cup, we have faith that they will one day, and there is nothing we love more than donning our whitest clothing as an intimidation factor for other teams we are playing.
But Wait, There’s More Phoenix Sporting Events!
From horse shows to the famed Waste Management Phoenix Open, every season in the Valley of the Sun is filled with sporting events, ensuring that your favorite sports enthusiast will have plenty to keep him or her occupied during their stay in Arizona. And on the nights when the teams are on the road, it’s ok, because our Paseo Homes vacation sanctuaries offer super-sized televisions, allowing guests to watch ALL the games.
