One of the things we love most about our desert home is the variety of activities we can engage in, ranging from natural adventures in the desert to sophisticated ones at local museums and in this case, a peek into the racing world that can be explored at the Penske Racing Museum. Racing is in our blood and the Phoenix Raceway, is home to two major NASCAR events, with some of the cars on display in the museum having raced in our local events, as well as other races that you may have heard of, including the Indianapolis 500. The museum is always a favorite activity for car and racing enthusiasts and is located close enough to some of our Paseo Homes Arizona accommodations that you won’t have to spend much time fighting Phoenix traffic, and this guide will show you all you can expect to see during your visit.
Located at 7191 E Chauncey Lane in Phoenix, Open Daily
The Penske Racing Museum is a captivating destination for motorsports enthusiasts and history buffs alike. Located in Scottsdale, Arizona, this museum offers a comprehensive journey through the rich and illustrious history of Team Penske, one of the most successful and iconic names in American motorsports. Visitors can explore a meticulously curated collection of race cars, memorabilia, trophies, and interactive exhibits that showcase the team’s storied legacy in NASCAR, IndyCar, and sports car racing. From the legendary Indy 500 victories to NASCAR championships, the Penske Racing Museum provides a unique opportunity to witness the evolution of racing technology and the incredible achievements of Team Penske over the decades. It’s a must-visit destination that offers a deep appreciation for the passion and dedication that have fueled the team’s enduring success in the world of racing.
9000 Square Feet of Automotive Beauty and Power
Offering two stories and 9000 square feet of space, the Penske Racing Museum is famous for housing 20 of the most prestigious race cars in the nation while offering at least 100 cars total. Colorful, sexy, and offering as much as 800 BHP under the hoods, it can be fascinating seeing how far the race world has come over the decades, with the earlier winners only offering 300 BHP in comparison with today’s fastest cars. Even more fascinating when you realize that today’s mustangs can offer as high as 470 BHP, which could mean if you had a time machine and traveled back to 1963, you could easily win the NASCAR race of your choice!
Decades of Winners
Although most of the cars on display in the Penske Racing Museum are authentic race cars, there are a few replicas, including the oldest car, the 1963 Pontiac Catalina that represents the one Roger Penske raced to victory in the 1963 NASCAR Riverside 250. Other replicas include the McClaren M16B 1972 Indy 500 winner and the Penske PC-9B, driven by NASCAR celeb Bobby Unser who won the Indianapolis 500 in 1981. Also offering the cars that set the pace in some of NASCAR’s biggest races, guests will get to view pace cars from the 1972 and the 2006 Indianapolis 500. It is the winning cars that may make your heart skip a beat, with our favorite being the 1994 Penske PC-23 that Al Unser Jr drove to victory in the 1994 Indy 500.
